AMY L. MILLER
Amy Miller is a founding partner and leads the firm’s chemical and biotechnology efforts. Her practice encompasses all phases of patent prosecution, reissue, and reexamination. Amy has worked in large patent law firms and specializes in the preparation and prosecution of patents in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biochemical arts. Amy has significant experience before the Board of Appeals and Patent Interferences, in the preparation of non-infringement, validity, and marketability opinions, and has counseled clients on various intellectual property issues, including the licensing of products. Amy has worked closely with clients in the chemical industries drafting complex chemical applications, with clients in the pharmaceutical industries to protect their research and development investments in compositions for the treatment of various diseases, and with clients in the biotechnology industries to obtain patents on nucleic acids, peptides, and antibodies, and their use in the prevention and treatment of various diseases. STEPHEN W. BARNS
Steve Barns is a founding partner and leads the firm’s materials science and nanotechnology efforts. His practice encompasses intellectual property management including strategy formulation, invention review, maintenance, and all phases of U.S. and international patent prosecution. Steve has worked as a patent examiner in the fields of optical communications, waveguides, and lasers and in full service patent law firms. Prior to founding Miller & Barns, Steve worked as senior counsel in a Fortune 500 company and was responsible for all intellectual property matters for a multibillion-dollar materials manufacturing division. Steve has significant experience before the European Patent Office and various European courts. He specializes in non-infringement, validity, and right-to-use opinions and has successfully counseled clients on designing around asserted patents. LAURA D. NAMMO
Prior to joining Miller & Barns, Laura was a partner in the McLean, VA office of Patton Boggs where she prepared and prosecuted patent applications in the chemical, biotechnical and mechanical arts. Laura also specialized in the preparation of patentability, non-infringement and invalidity opinions and advised clients regarding intellectual property-related matters including litigation. Laura has also worked as an in-house patent attorney where she prepared and prosecuted patent applications, prepared non-infringement and invalidity opinions, negotiated and prepared various IP agreements, and developed and implemented a trademark licensing program.
